Update: I am no longer hosting this workshop.
As many of you might know, I am hosting a marketing strategy workshop. In a recent post, a lot of discussion was created in regards to the state of the industry…Well, we’ve decided to try to do something about it.
Confirmed through the comments and the photographers I am working with, the landscape of this industry is changing. I could be wrong, but I see the most traction in two areas:
- newer photographers – because of a lack of experience
- veteran photographers – lost clarity through the years
The result is unanimous – a tactical slaughter of each other through slashing of prices, which will lead to an eventual degradation of the industry. All while the middle tier is being risk averse.
This isn’t the case for everyone though. Those who have clarity in their businesses are flourishing!
A simple test is to ask yourself, “Why you?”
My observation is that the universal answer will be “to be unique.” My question for you is, “how?”
- What if I were to say that I am willing to put my money where my mouth is?
- What if I were to take on this challenge and try to teach these seemingly esoteric strategies and apply it to photography?
- Who would be interested?
We are planning to host two complimentary seminars on August 4th and August 5th respectively.
- 0-3 years – learn how to distinctively set yourself apart and uniquely market yourself
- 3+ years – turbo charge your existing business and find clarity again
Want to get one of these free seminar seats? Instructions:
- Identify whether you’re interested in the first class or second class
- Comment below why you think you are a good candidate
Sincerely,
Lawrence Chan
P.S. Remember that marketing is sociology. And as culture and tastes evolve, so does marketing, but the universal laws stay constant (as long as we continue being human).

Option 2 …
I’d love to hear what you guys have to say, and be able to share an open and honest review afterwards.
I’ve never heard a piece of bad advice from Jeff and would love to bring this type of focus to our business. I can see the potential value of this workshop and would love to be a Guinea pig.
And who in their right mind wouldn’t want to take their business to the next level!?
I am interested in the first workshop. Wow would this be AMAZING! Honestly… I feel I need as much help as I can get! I just paid for and designed a website, I spent a bunch and went to the workshop of a local photographer. One of the things she said about the photography industry is that we need to not sell ourselves short or cheapen the work, Stick to your prices, you are not a used car salesman, your work is of worth! … so I know a girl who is getting married and I sent her my prices… she wanted to bargain with me and get a deal. I am not shooting her wedding because I tried to stick to my guns. I am a newer photographer and my husband is about to start law school. I could really use the money, so as of late I feel like maybe I should just be really cheap to ensure the jobs. I respect photography… I would greatly appreciate this opportunity!!!
Thank you so much!
Stephanie Ortega
Thank you so much for this! I’d love to be part of the 1st group …. I’ve shot 8 or 9 weddings total, and I think my work is pretty solid but VERY MUCH would love the help taking my business to the next step.
You all are the best!
xo
Thank you so much for offering this! I would like to get into Class #1 please!!!
I feel at lost with how and where my business is going. I’m just starting out. I’ve invested in quite a few things but I just don’t know how to market myself or my brand. I’m at a point where I almost feel as though, this career may not be for me as I lack the business and marketing skills. I’ll truly appreciate this!
I really appreciate the fact that you are willing to give back. I’d love to be invited to the 1st workshop. I just started my wedding photography business last October. I had the good fortune of attending a Bob & Dawn Davis workshop which truly changed my life. The information I learned from them has helped me be very successful this year. I just booked wedding #29 for the year a couple of days ago. I have had a lot of success but I’ve got so much more to learn. During the last nine months, I’ve raised my prices from $1800 to $2800. In some ways, I think I’m still too low. I really do need help understanding the business side of the industry. I would love the opportunity to gain more knowledge that I could share with my fellow photographers in Little Rock. I’ve spent a lot of time this year building relationships not only with potential clients but also fellow wedding photographers in my area. It has been a wonderful process and I’ve gained so many new friends. I’d love to come and learn strategies that I could bring back and share with all of them. Thank you so much for offering this! I learned so much from the SEO videos that I purchased and Dawn Davis has told me how great it was learning with you at a recent gathering that I’d love to be able to come and meet and learn from you myself.
Would love to be apart of the 3+ class!
I’m always on the lookout for ways to improve and challenge the way I run my business, so I can “deliver happiness” and give back to the community. I think I’m a good candidate because I eat photography for breakfast and pursue good ideas until they became greater :)
Also, it would give me an excuse to hang out with you both and the crew! Thanks for this opportunity.
Hey guys,
Thanks to you both for the willingness to share you ideals and vision. I would be interested in the 1st Class on Aug 4th if you still have openings.
Danny
I have been in business for 5 years. While I have a FT job, I easily put in FT hours with my photography as well. My FT is ending at the end of the year and I will be going truly FT with my photography business, and have a significant increase in business to do to exceed my salary. I’d love to participate and generate new marketing ideas!
I would love to learn how to set myself apart in this market and could benefit from the first seminar. I’ve wanted to settle into my style a bit before I was too dquick o rebrand and see where my creativity took me. Being ifferent and running a classy business is really important to me.
Candidate for the first class.
I want to get into wedding photography, but am overwhelmed and don’t know where to start. I have shot a few weddings and know that I love shooting, and want to make this something I do. Your seminar would give me a great foundation on which to build. Photography should be about giving all you got, going beyond, and getting what you might have thought was impossible. If this is a chance to build on that dream, I am all in.
[...] Jeff Jochum and I created a website to share business strategies that pertained to a complimentary seminar that we’re hosting. Here were some very interesting questions people had via comments (plus [...]
oh man! I’d love option #2. I would love to learn from you and Jeff. Jeff has such sound business advice, has taken many companies to new heights and has such a great influence on the wedding market. I have seen Jeff nurture many diamonds in the rough and would love that same guidance.
I need a good shot in the arm. I have taken a huge leap and moved my business to New York and really need to hit the ground running. Up my game and stand out among the thousands that are here. I have great ideas but don’t always have the confidence to move forward. Jeff’s inspiration, both of your insights and knowledge could help me hit New York full force.
I have been in biz 7 years and feel like I am leveling out, at a plateau. I need some information that will give me a push up and over the hill. Having someone to help me focus and build on ideas is something I could use.
I would love to be a part of seminar #1 for 0-3 years in business. I just started my business a couple of months ago. I need help with marketing BAD! There are so many other natural light photographers in my area but I believe that my style differs from theirs. I have been brainstorming of ways to set my self even further apart from my competition. I need help in marketing. I really need to show off my uniqueness somehow and break through to the top.
I would LOVE to be a participant in the first group. The topic is something that I feel like I could be a sponge absorbing all the info.
Why I’d like to participate: I got to hear Jeff speak off the cuff about the industry and a few other photo-related topics during Dane Sander’s Boulder, CO workshop. Everything he said made me think. And then think some more. Since that was just an introduction, I’d LOVE to hear what you AND Jeff have to share with us!
I’d love to have a space for the second seminar…clarity in my business is something I’ve struggled with. I’ve gotten better, but I definitely could use some advice. Actually, I think I would benefit from both seminars, but if I have to choose one, it’d be #2.
[...] Many people emailed asking to join Startup Strategy’s August workshop, but due to fire codes at Irvine Hilton, Jeff and I can only stuff so many people in a conference [...]
If you have room still, I would love to join you for the first class. I am “coming back” to wedding photography but with the time that has passed, I consider myself a new noob :) I am still holding down a “regular” job but I want the transition to full-time photographer to happen soon, like 2011. I value both of your guys’ information, and you are local to me so if the stars align, it would be easy for me to take part.
I am also involved in a mentoring program with another respected photographer. I am investing in my business with practical, hand-on ways, and I consider this seminar one of those ways.
Anyway, I hope this gets your eye, and we can at least talk.
Thanks a ton!
I am interested in the second class. I am starting my business over (a new me, in a different town, and seem stuck in a rut from the old one. I am tired of that old person she was never me. (hear next line, to the tune of “I want to be Free http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bCHEO477u44)
“I want to be ME!”
Is it too late to want to participate? I’m super interested in both as you kind of rock my socks everytime you open your mouth…er…type. Whatever. I’m in a HIGHLY competitive market where the saturation level is at 200%. I need some help. I’m your gal.
Btw (that’s my “P.S”), Did I mention that I just happen to be down there for work in Irvine that week. Actually, Lake Forrest but if you pick me I promise to wash your car after the seminar. And if you don’t have one, you can watch me wash mine, it’s filthy.
Love,
Alli

I’m new in the industry. Mos of my work has been through others or as 2nd shooter.
I’d like to stablish a name for myself, however, despite my skills with the gear I lack tremendously experience in the business side of it.
I’m a great admirer of your work as a photographer and as businessman.
Compared with the cartoon series “Avatar the last airbender” :-D I feel I have great potential as photographer but in order to succeed I must gather the knowledge of the other elements and who could be better to teach this part part of it than you? Who has conquer the lighting, framing, exposure, marketing, SEO and Business “bending” techniques The Avatar of photography himself !!!
Hope to be consider for it.
I have been in the wedding biz for 1 solid year so if there is room, I would be honored and blessed to get into # newer photographers – because of a lack of experience ( class )
Why I feel I should be considered because number one I fully believe in what you teach! you are proof that it works! and it makes sense. I am not going to act like I know it all, so I would defiantly benefit in learning more strategies! Please consider me! :)
I apperciate you that you share your pearls of wisdom and I can’t wait to meet you again in Irvine!
I would like to go the the Wednesday meeting because I would like to play a unique part in this industry and learn what the best know so that I may apply myself. I could really use the help in my effort to grow in all areas and make a difference.
Thanks,
Any chance you’ll make an appearance on Creative Live?
