Yesterday was my first SmugMug presentation! Peter Garr was the gracious leader who invited me to speak.
It was the second time I used this presentation; first time was at SD Photog Shootout. As I was weaving through the attendees, Anastasia asked if I was going to cover pricing and packages.
“Didn’t plan to, but I can add that in…right now.” People kept asking, so I kept modifying. By the end of the evening, Tamara Young can attest that my slides were nothing like San Diego’s presentation.

Core Focus: Understanding And Marketing For Your Target Audience
The following are two slides out of the presentation. It should give a general idea as to what I talked about.
Everyone’s answers were unanimous. Yet a lot of our efforts were catered for the wrong audience. I am not encouraging that we dismiss peer approval; just saying that efforts should be distributed equally.
Before crafting a blog post or spending advertising dollars, think about where your marketing efforts are placed.
Ask yourselves questions like:
- would I buy that?
- would I pay for that
- where would my target audience get their exposure? TheKnot, Grace Ormonde?
- what is it that they fear most?
And etc…

Thanks again for an awesome presentation. Some of the things you covered are so easy to do it’s easy not to do it. They’re simply put, things that you could use to instantly grow your photography business. I felt like an idiot several times throughout your presentation. You know, those “why didn’t I think of that” type of moments.

You did it again! The presentation was great and the additions were perfect. Adding the Video/Still then telling the story about them and the benefits of using that combo really stood out as a major addition to your presentation. Thanks so much for walking us through your process of reasoning and the psychology behind the whole process. Your delivery could not have been more clear and concise. I’m so glad that I came out again. Not only to get the extra goodies, but to hang out with the awesome L.A. Smug Photogs.

question lawrence, I have been thinking about that lately, I have been tweeting and blogging for about stuff for other photogs so you are saying do not give it up but balance it, my goal is weddings but I am also a mom and can not help talk about mom things, comes naturally so catering to more of a momblogger thing to which has gotten me some goodies and can use it for lifestyle and family etc,
so I think I am all over the place and random and I see here, so actually think about your tweets as part of your brand and marketing

Ditto to what Jason and Tamara said. Your strategies are so simple that I think in our efforts to be savvy, over complicate the process and miss the target all together. I definitely had several “aha” moments that I know will change the way I operate my business.

I felt so fortunate that I made it to yesterday’s Smug (despite missing the first 30 minutes… boo! LA traffic!). Lucia was stuck at work but I came back and relayed all the stories to her :) She especially liked how you used one example story and walked us step-by-step through the whole process – from the first moment of contact to having the bride asking where to send you the check, even without having seen the contract :p
Will have to swing by to your booth in WPPI and play the Nintento!

I have been thinking a lot about marketing lately..I compare it to fishing. What species of fish am I trying to catch? What type of bait are they biting on? What time of the day are they biting etc etc.. Would love to come to a presentation! You’re a smart cookie!
