Last week, Julie and I drove to San Francisco to play with some friends. The spontaneous idea spawned from her craving crab. “Happy wife, happy life,” right?
Anyway, on our way back, we passed by a number of rest stops. To my dissatisfaction, many signs had burned out lights. Sure, I sometimes have a burned out light bulb at home too, but these are businesses.
This reminded me of Disneyland. From my years of going to the theme park, not once have I caught them with a burned out light bulb. I don’t know how true it is, but I understand that they change the light bulbs way before their expiration dates.
This post isn’t really about preemptively changing light bulbs. It’s about …
Adaptation
It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is the most adaptable to change.
– Charles Darwin
The lesson we can learn from Disneyland is simple. Don’t wait until the last minute to adapt [or change light bulbs].
Stay hungry. Stay foolish.
– Steve Jobs
Always learn. Always adapt. And execute preemptively.
Always New Strategies
Part of the reason why I wrote Social Media Marketing for Digital Photographers is because there are many unexplored strategies that I have successfully executed for companies I’ve consulted, but haven’t seen used by boutique studios.
And social media marketing goes beyond tagging clients on Facebook or the ones I’ve written briefly about:
So, while having a burrito in San Francisco, I was inspired by a local magazine 7×7 to host a seminar on my book … sort of a CliffsNotes version. It sounds random (burrito, magazine, seminar …), but I’ll explain it to the attendees.
Tofurious CliffsNotes Seminar
Anyone in LA / OC interested in this? I’m considering October 28th or November 3rd. I won’t charge for it, but I will need some help. I need a venue / studio / mansion lol.
All in all, remember to learn, adapt and stay ahead. And hopefully, what I will have to share will get you there.
Cheers,
Lawrence Chan
P.S. I really miss Steve Jobs.
P.P.S. 7×7 represents the size of San Francisco, which is 7 miles by 7 miles.
P.P.P.S. Also inspired by my burrito, I want to conduct a photo shoot after my Tofurious CliffsNotes seminar. You’re encouraged to stay to be my models :)
P.P.P.P.S. Speaking of photo shoots, this Friday, I will be photographing the table top that was used for Kim Kardashian’s wedding. It will be used as a national ad. I doubt it will happen, but I hope she swings by … and we go out for lunch and become the best of friends. And then I’ll make appearances on Keeping Up with the Kardashians (e.g., Bora Bora).
P.P.P.P.P.S. Yes, I watch that show.

I will bring a fruit salad because I’m trying a organic raw food diet and I will make everyone suffer with me.
LOL! Well there’s nothing wrong with that! So long as there would be Kale Chips- I’d SWIM to California so I could have some with you Lawrence. Mmmmmmmmmm..kale chips.
I’m in the OC and up for a seminar! I don’t really have any hookups, but Pfinix Studios in Orange hosted a great networking event for a bunch of us ‘togs back in August. It’s basically just an open, concrete floored studio space but it could work! Kiera of Jakfoto Productions is the one that coordinated it so you could get in touch with her if that sounds like a plan. :)
I would love to come, I wish I had a venue hook up, but not yet. I just got turned onto your blog and LOVE it. Im getting started out right now as an event cinematographer. I’m trying to soak up great information like a sponge.
Haha – so sad at this moment I don’t live in OC, but I AM just about to pull my kale chips out of the oven. Wishing I was a California Girl…
Doesn’t everyone secretly watch the Kardashians? Unless you’re me… I watch them blatantly and proudly :) Pretty awesome you’re photographing KK’s tabletop! I already knew this because she and I are BFF’s ;)
LOL well send my regards to KK xo!
November way better than Oct (USC PARENTS WEEKEND BRO IN OCT)
Lawerence I’m a trained chef that cooked at Moto in Chicago. A bribe is in the works here…
I’m a UCLA graduate, so I have no idea what USC is doing lol. But bribery does work, so maybe November it is.
I’m very interested in every part of this… The seminar, the raw foods, lunch with Kim K…. Count me in!!!
Man, I wish I could go to your seminar, specially knowing it is free, but I’m in Atlanta. Any chance of a little online update on the content?
Ur great man!
Alas, it’ll be a long day and streaming the whole thing will be painful :x The book will contain most of the concepts, except that I will present it in a slightly different way.
oooooh i’d love to go to the seminar! your seminars rule. i’d also be happy to play model… i love being the center of attention ;)
PS thanks to that deeeeeelicious looking oyster photo i am now craving oysters at 10:45am. awesome.
Radical! It’ll be fun I promise.
would love to come to your seminar, as long as it’s day time, I think I can swing it. (nights are tough with two little ones). I vote October 28, if you’re still deciding between the two. Would be happy to bring some snacks.
Thank you so much for your blog. I am jumping from one to another blogpost this whole afternoon and it helps me so much with understanding more about marketing and setting up my photography business. So just a big THANK YOU!
