Last Friday, Greg Bumatay invited me to speak at Cypress College amongst some of industry’s greats. I was very flattered.
I do not speak publicly very often. One of my greatest fears is an empty room. Some supporters promised to come to calm my nerves – thanks Julie, Rob, Jesse, and a few others.
By 2:00pm, people were virtually leaking out the door. Granted, the room’s capacity was only 30, but for that 1.5 hours I felt almost as popular as Jasmine Star. Put me in the lecture hall and this scene would look completely different.
**Note to self: always speak in small rooms.
I want to extend my gratitude for everyone who came despite the sauna-like room. If anyone needed clarification or had questions, feel free to comment below.

Also, I realized that I do not have a handsome JD to help photograph the event, so if anyone has pictures, I’d love to post them up. Twitter or comment below with jpg link – thanks!
Hope you all had a splendid weekend,
Lawrence Chan
P.S. So who bought an iPad? Fad / rad?
P.P.S. I have an iPad and I go to bed with it.
P.P.P.S. A couple of second shooter jobs went up this weekend on the job board!

Thanks for helping the college kick off with such a great event!
I was honored to be a part of it!
It definitely was like a sauna in there but it was worth it! I’m a broken record about this but you were a fab speaker!
Thank you Kristin!! xo
So I wouldn’t call you Jasmine just yet but you did awesome! Jk
But really you gave some great insight! Thanks!
LOL in no capacity would I compare myself to her unless it was on a hot day and I had free ice cream
Glad you had fun!
Speaking of the iPad…I’m on the fence. Kenny Kim told me how incredible it can be for photographers, but I’m having a hard time seeing all the benefits (aside from maybe looking pretty-darn-cool during an initial client meeting.) Do you know of any resources (or blog posts) about what photogs are using their iPads for? I’m just begging for an excuse to get one!
Becker talks about it frequently. The main perk is to display beautiful images and videos on a gorgeous platform.
3 Things I Learned:
1. My mom can never yell at me again for being a “rebel.”
2. The “I say when. I say where” demand will not only work with my fiance.
3. Tofu will get you places.
In all honesty, that was a very influential and eye-opening session. It definitely made me reevaluate my positioning. Great stuff L.C.
LOL nice how you applied the concepts even to non-business relationships! Marketing is a lot like dating.
Haha I go to bed with my IPAD too lol. Thanks for setting up the JOB BOARD.
Great job on your presentation (I heard plenty of good stuff) and THANK YOU so much for coming out! I had a feeling that room wouldn’t be big enough for you – there were so many eager listeners I couldn’t even peek through the door – that’s why you saw me at the window.
Thanks again for inviting me Greg – I feel really special!
I’m doing it again next Thursday at OC Smug; last minute thing. I hope to see you again soon!
that is cute and funny!
Hi Lawrence,
My wife Yan and I had scheduled to come and see you. (did not want to miss it), yet we got a last minute call and had to rush out.
Hi To Greg too and all the rest.
if you are going to post anything we can see or hear please let us know!
ps – is that a MKIV I see you with!!!! – darn, I am only with 2 5D MK II and a 7D shotting these fusion films, I hear that IV is awesome!
all the best
Gary
Wish I lived out your way, I would have loved to go. I am totally buying an iPad when I can get my hands on one! I am pretty stoked about using it for my photography.
Thanks for your presentation Lawrence, you were informative and charming. Not itemizing myself was top of my list, I’ve now removed my prices… instead I’ve put up a cost of session and an average client investment… that way if you’re not willing to invest…I’m pretty sure I’m putting up the barriers you talked about. Let’s see if that makes me the desirable rebel
Hi Lawrence!
)
Thanks for the fun presentation at Cypress College! I was the one who won the first t-shirt from you ( size small, sitting in the front corner seat

Glad you liked it! Congrats on getting a tshirt! Hopefully it’ll make a comfy workout attire.
Hahahahhaaha!!! You’re so funny!!!
I love my iPad! It’s so cool I almost wanna smash it. I used it for a new client meeting the other day (my original intention) and it was a hit! The ability to hand a potential client such a beautiful screen with my images displayed on it was powerful. I booked that wedding today (2 days later) and I can’t say for certain how much my iPad helped, but it definitely differentiated me from the other photog they met with. I am thrilled with my purchase.
PS: I go to bed with it too!
Hi Lawrence,
Thanks for coming. I actually got quite a bit out of your talk. I also removed my prices (except for starting rates to “weed” out people). I also tried the “rebel” tactic with my next inquiry. It totally didn’t work–they went with the first cheaper photographer they came across. Bleh. But…I did feel like I owe it to myself to stick to my guns and not cave.
Would love to work with / or chat with you in a smaller setting in the near future.
Thanks again,
Emily
